The town of Rio de Mouro was elevated to the category of town on July 2,1993.
It is 6 km from the municipal headquarters and 15 km from the city
from Lisbon. Its neighboring parishes are Agualva and Mira-Sintra, Algueirão-Mem
Martins, Cacém and São Marcos, Queluz and Belas and Sintra, in the municipality of Sintra,
São Domingos de Rana, in the municipality of Cascais and, Porto Salvo, in the municipality of Oeiras

The origin of Rio de Mouro cannot be located with
precision in time. It appears in documents in the Middle Ages, but because there is no
housed no ecclesiastical institution at this time, the records and
Descriptions of its territory and population are scarce. One of the first
references appear in 1275 in the Book of Estates of D. João de Portel. The tradition
maintains that it was in this area of the river that the mayor of Sintra lost his
life, during his escape through the Taking of Lisbon from the Moors, in 1147.
The presence of water was preponderant in the foundational legends of this and other
nearby lands (as is the case of Agualva) and this element was the main
population fixation factor. Inserted in a less fertile space, the population
depended on rivers and streams for agricultural use of the soil and,
consequently, for their subsistence
