The origin of Rio de Mouro cannot be located with
precision in time. It appears in documents in the Middle Ages, but because there is no
housed no ecclesiastical institution at this time, the records and

references appear in 1275 in the Book of Estates of D. João de Portel. The tradition
maintains that it was in this area of the river that the mayor of Sintra lost his
life, during his escape through the Taking of Lisbon from the Moors, in 1147.

nearby lands (as is the case of Agualva) and this element was the main
population fixation factor. Inserted in a less fertile space, the population
depended on rivers and streams for agricultural use of the soil and,
