BICA (Spout) owes its name to the various spouts that existed in the lands of Duarte Belo (which today gives its name to the main street). One of these spouts, known for its high sulphate properties, was moved to where it still stands today, in 1615. It was recommended at the time that anyone suffering from these ailments wash their eyes there and, initially, when the street received this spout, it was called "Rua Direita da Boa Vista da Bica dos Olhos", which today is just Rua da Boavista. This spout still exists (although it no longer has water) and can be seen next to nº32 Rua da Boavista, at the foot of Bica. There was still the Bica Grande, until not long ago, a large tank where women washed their clothes and the boys bathed, and which gave its name to Calçada e Escadinhas da Bica Grande. And a third, at Calçada da Bica Pequena. The Bica Ascensor, runs through the entire neighborhood from Rua de São Paulo to Calvário, and today dominates the landscape.
This elevator, promoted to monument in 2002, has already been the star of artistic interventions: Vhils decided to mirror it in 2010 and in 2013 it gained a pattern similar to the Portuguese sidewalk; It also appeared (among others) in Lisbon Story, by Wim Wenders.
With a short walk of 400m we are in the middle of Chiado, one of the most emblematic neighborhoods in the city of Lisbon.
